I had read these Dr. Alexandra Gladstone novels years ago in paperback and loved them. I was very sad when Ms. Paul's publishers decided not to continue them. And I kept searching for ebook versions to come out, which took forever. But once I found them, I bought them all and have enjoyed re-reading them! this was my first book in this series and it wont be my last. It was a interesting look at how women doctors were look on in this era. the mystery kept you quessing till the end.

This is the second book in the series. While they can be read as stand alones, characters from previous books play important roles, so it's nice to have the background.
This mystery was a bit wordy, but you get a very thoroughly complete education on English law regarding divorce and women's rights or lack thereof in the 18th-19th century. Prepare to be appalled.
I enjoy the characters but the story moves very slowly. Much repetition of inner thoughts and events. Ending was anticlimactic. These books are more about describing daily life, mostly of women, in late 1880's England and how women had to maneuver social biases and laws existent at the time in order to obtain a sort of justice. That in itself makes these books appealing.

His young and very beautiful wife, willful stepson, protective maid? A little fluffy, but kept my interest, owing mostly to the time setting... horse and buggy era. A woman as a doctor, egads, what next. Enjoyable.

An Improper Death is a delightful read, and a fitting second book in the Dr. Alexandra Gladstone series. Once again, Ms. Paul proves her mastery both of story telling and of interesting period details that draw her readers to turn page after page, savoring every moment in the story's development. You'll appreciate the subtle humor and keen insight into human relationships the author employs as she leads us through the unfolding solution to the murder. It all becomes clear in the end - the VERY end!
I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
